The vat does not accurately picture the way Lucy's trial by fire is described in all the sources, which have her placed in a fire and hot oil and pitch were thrown over her. And the slashing of her neck happens after that trial, not during.
But these small departures from the details enables the artist to make visual the demure calm of Lucy's response to these outrages and her words, "I have prayed to Jesu Christ that this fire have no domination in me to the end that the Christian men that believe in God make of thee their derision."
